The Etch A Sketch is an art toy invented in 1959 by André Cassagnes and originally manufactured by The Ohio Art Company. It works by turning two different knobs to control a small stylus, which scrapes off aluminum powder from the toy’s glass screen and results in an etched design. The design can be quickly erased by shaking the toy, allowing the powder to reattach to the screen.
This composition is not an Etch A Sketch—it just sounds like one. Or it’s the sound of an artwork produced by a multimedia, interdimensional Etch A sketch.
(this is not an) Etch A Sketch was premiered by the Daedalus Quartet at Rose Recital Hall, The University of Pennsylvania, on November 3, 2017. The group performed the piece on the Bowerbird Concert Series in Philadelphia on January 23rd, 2018. The piece received a Merit Award from The Tribeca New Music Young Composer Competition.
